EMDR

What is EMDR?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, it is a psychological therapy that was developed in the 1980’s.

EMDR therapy uses bilateral stimulation, right/left eye movement, or tactile stimulation, which repeatedly activates the opposite sides of the brain, releasing emotional experiences that are “trapped” in the nervous system. This assists the neurophysiological system, the basis of the mind/body connection, to free itself of blockages and reconnect itself.

EMDR is recommended for the treatment of trauma in Guidelines by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE, 2005) and most recently in 2013 the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommended EMDR therapy for PTSD in adults and children.
